Does Your Doctor Accept Your 2027 Medicare Advantage Plan in The Villages? Here's How to Check

Medicare Annual Enrollment begins October 15, and for residents of The Villages, one of the most important questions to ask is simple: Will my doctors accept my Medicare Advantage plan in 2027?

Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7, 2026

Changes made during this window generally take effect January 1, 2027.

The answer isn't always as straightforward as you might think.

An insurance company may offer several Medicare Advantage plans in the same area. Your doctor might participate in one of those plans but not another. And just because you visited a particular hospital last year doesn't automatically mean it will be in-network under your 2027 coverage.

I'm Max Bumgardner, a licensed independent insurance broker who lives in The Villages. I help neighbors compare Medicare coverage based on their doctors, prescriptions, healthcare needs, and budget.

Here's how to check your coverage before making a decision.

1. Accepting Medicare Is Not the Same as Accepting Your Medicare Advantage Plan

A doctor's office may say, “Yes, we accept Medicare.”

That's useful information, but it doesn't necessarily answer the question for someone enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage work differently.

With Original Medicare, you can generally visit doctors and healthcare providers nationwide who accept Medicare. A standard Medigap policy can help pay certain Medicare cost-sharing expenses.

With Medicare Advantage, your coverage is administered through a private Medicare-approved insurance plan. Most plans have provider networks.

Depending on whether you have an HMO, PPO, or another type of Medicare Advantage plan, you may need to use participating doctors and hospitals or pay more for out-of-network care.

The important question is not simply whether your doctor accepts Medicare.

It's whether your doctor participates in your exact Medicare Advantage plan for 2027.

2. Why Your Exact Plan Matters

Suppose two neighbors in The Villages both have Medicare Advantage coverage through the same insurance company.

That doesn't necessarily mean they have the same doctors, hospitals, or out-of-pocket expenses.

One person may have an HMO, while the other has a PPO. Even plans of the same type from one company can differ in benefits, participating providers, and costs.

That's why checking the insurance company name alone is not enough.

When reviewing your coverage, have your actual plan name and plan identification information available.

Ask about that specific plan — not simply whether the office works with the insurance company.

Also confirm that the information applies to 2027, rather than relying only on your current year's coverage.

3. Why This Is Especially Important in The Villages

Healthcare in The Villages isn't limited to one community or county.

Residents may see a primary care physician in The Villages, a specialist in Leesburg, and another provider in Ocala.

The Villages area extends across Sumter, Lake, and Marion counties, which makes checking your provider network especially important.

A provider being located nearby doesn't automatically mean that provider participates in your plan.

Likewise, an insurance company's presence in Central Florida doesn't guarantee that every hospital, doctor, or outpatient facility is included in every plan it offers.

You should verify each healthcare provider individually, including the specific office location and, when applicable, the facility where a procedure would take place.

4. Five Questions to Ask Your Doctor's Office Before Choosing a Medicare Plan

Here are five questions worth asking before you enroll or decide to keep your existing plan.

Question 1: Do you participate in my exact Medicare Advantage plan for 2027?

Give the office your insurance company's name and the exact plan name or identification information.

Don't settle for “We take that insurance.” Ask whether the office can confirm participation in the specific plan you're considering.

Question 2: Is my particular doctor participating at this office location?

A healthcare organization may have multiple providers and locations.

Confirm the physician you actually see and the location where you intend to receive care.

Question 3: Are you accepting new patients with this plan?

This matters particularly if you're new to The Villages or considering changing physicians.

A doctor appearing in a network directory doesn't always establish that the practice is currently accepting new patients.

Question 4: Will I need a referral or prior authorization for specialist care?

Some Medicare Advantage plans require referrals for certain specialists. Prior authorization may also be required for particular services or procedures.

The rules vary by plan, so verify them with the insurance company.

Question 5: Which hospitals or facilities would be used if I need additional care?

Your doctor's participation doesn't automatically establish that every hospital, imaging center, surgery center, or specialist involved in your care participates in the same plan.

If you have an upcoming procedure or ongoing treatment, ask about all the providers and facilities that may be involved.

These five questions can help you avoid surprises when receiving care.

5. How to Verify Your Medicare Advantage Provider Network

Start with the insurance company's provider directory for the specific 2027 plan you're considering.

Then follow up directly with the doctor's office.

Finally, contact the insurance company or plan administrator to confirm the provider's network status.

If you receive conflicting answers, ask for written confirmation when possible and document whom you spoke with and when.

The plan can help clarify network participation and coverage rules.

Medicare also provides information about comparing plans and understanding provider networks at Medicare.gov.

Remember that provider networks can change, so check again before receiving significant care.

6. What If Your Doctor Leaves Your Medicare Advantage Network?

If your doctor is leaving your plan's network, contact your insurance company as soon as possible.

Ask when the change becomes effective, whether another participating provider is available, and whether any continuity-of-care protections apply.

If you are receiving ongoing treatment, ask specifically about transitional care arrangements.

A provider leaving a network does not automatically mean everyone qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period. In some circumstances, a significant network change may support a Special Enrollment Period, but eligibility depends on the situation and applicable Medicare rules.

You can contact 1-800-MEDICARE to ask whether your circumstances qualify.

If you're reviewing coverage during fall Annual Enrollment, you can also compare your 2027 options before the December 7 deadline.

7. What About Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Some residents prefer Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap.

With Original Medicare, you can generally see healthcare providers nationwide who accept Medicare, without being limited to a Medicare Advantage provider network.

Medigap helps cover certain out-of-pocket costs left by Original Medicare, depending on the policy.

You still need to consider premiums, prescription coverage, and the specific benefits of the Medigap plan. Medigap is not automatically the best option for everyone.

Important enrollment consideration: If you are leaving Medicare Advantage and want Medigap, acceptance may depend on whether you qualify for an open-enrollment or guaranteed-issue right. Otherwise, medical underwriting may apply. Never assume you can obtain a particular Medigap policy simply because you can leave Medicare Advantage.

8. When Should You Check Your Doctors for 2027?

The best time is before you finalize your coverage decision.

Medicare's fall Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Changes generally take effect January 1, 2027.

This is also the time to review your Annual Notice of Change, prescription coverage, premiums, and other benefits.

If your existing Medicare Advantage plan is continuing and still fits your needs, you may not need to change plans.

But it's worth verifying that your providers, benefits, and costs will still work for you in the coming year.

9. You Can Check Your Doctors Yourself — or Get Help

You can research Medicare plans yourself through Medicare.gov, contact insurance companies directly, and verify participation with your providers.

You can also work with a licensed independent insurance broker.

My approach begins with your doctors, prescriptions, healthcare needs, and budget. I compare relevant options from the insurance companies I represent and help you understand the trade-offs.

There is no charge for my assistance, and there's no obligation to enroll. Insurance companies may compensate me when you enroll through my agency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Villages Health accept every Medicare Advantage plan?

Do not assume that any healthcare organization accepts every Medicare Advantage plan. Verify the exact plan, provider, and office location directly with the healthcare organization and insurance company.

If my doctor accepts Medicare, does that mean they accept Medicare Advantage?

No. Accepting Original Medicare doesn't automatically mean a doctor participates in a specific Medicare Advantage plan's network.

Can I see an out-of-network doctor with a Medicare Advantage PPO?

PPOs generally provide coverage for covered out-of-network services, usually at higher cost-sharing. Specific coverage rules apply, and you should confirm that the provider will treat you under the plan's terms.

What if my doctor is not in my Medicare Advantage HMO network?

HMOs generally require in-network providers for routine non-emergency care, subject to exceptions such as emergency care, out-of-area urgently needed care, and temporary out-of-area dialysis. Some HMO-POS plans offer additional out-of-network options. Check with your plan before receiving care.

Can I change Medicare Advantage plans if my doctor leaves the network?

You may be able to change plans during an applicable enrollment period. A doctor leaving the network doesn't automatically establish a Special Enrollment Period. Ask Medicare whether your circumstances qualify.

When is Medicare Annual Enrollment for 2027 coverage?

October 15 through December 7, 2026. Changes generally take effect January 1, 2027.
